Yesterday’s debate on the Indigenous people was back and forth, with China and Russia on one side and France and Somalia on the other. France and Somalia feel that the states Russia, China and Iran are neglecting the Declaration of Rights for Indigenous people signed in 2007. Russia feels that some but not all of the Non- government Organizations are not in Russia’s interests, when asked during an unmoderated caucus. When the conference was in a moderated caucus China claimed not to have any indigenous people. Which eventually lead to IIED (Somalia) calling China arrogant and China calling France out on their colonies. Somalia then reminded China that they “enslaved thousands and thousands of Tibetans”.
Today’s conference is looking just as promising, with the discussion of Environmental Stability for the indigenous people. When interviewed in an unmoderated caucus today the Lubicon Cree (Canada) is very concerned about the Tar sands in the area and how it is affecting the indigenous people in the area, causing unknown cancers and polluting their land. The Canadian government managed to destroy 80% of their land with the tar sands. The indigenous people of Brazil have also lots mush of their land to people constructing roads and damns, commented the CIHI (Brazil). France made notice that they developed the France Debt Development Contract which rebuilds the regions that was destroyed in Congo. When asked Russia stated that they are “disarming old nuclear weapons in order to minimize the exposure of the indigenous people to radiation”.
Here’s an interesting side note, Russia who seems to be working with China told the U.K., Colombia and Afghanistan, that China has pushed their indigenous people out of their land. When China was asked the response was no comment.
