Human Rights discussions on Somalia were a contradiction on the purpose of the committee. The discussion seemed to go very quickly from the people of Somalia to the piracy occurring around Somalia’s coast and how it was affecting the countries surrounding it and the oil prices. As of yet Somalia’s people are still without a functional national government and the civil war is destroying the people’s lives. Hopefully the Human Rights committee can steer some focus to the people in Somalia that are suffering because of the clan wars and the terrorist acts of Al-Shabab. It is true there should focus on the Pirates around the coast as well, but let’s not forget that the Human Rights Council should be concerned with the rights of Somali citizens and not the merely oil prices.
